Trump Hits Biden Over Observing Virus Restrictions

Commentary

Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States

I promised myself that I’d take a break from Around the Block today and instead go back to writing a few more chapters of my book, “Bashert.” (Once Trump finally goes away I’ll really have more time to finish it.)

But then I saw this on “Morning Joe” (the second part of the video courtesy of Trevor Noah and “The Daily Show”) and couldn’t help myself.

Pence flouts Mayo Clinic policy on masks — which is to wear one

Commentary

Veep vigorously defends his decision

As you all probably know by now, Vice President Mike Pence visited the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. During his visit, and in an earlier meeting with Minnesota governor, Tim Walz (D), Pence was the only person in the room not wearing a mask.

This despite instructions on the Mayo Clinic website requesting that all patients, visitors and personnel bring and wear a face mask to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Forget Denmark – “Something is rotten in the United States!”

Commentary

With apologies to William Shakespeare

I’ve written two letters to my Congresswoman, Lois Frankel, over the last two days. I won’t bore you with the entire letters, but I thought you’d be interested in the subject: PPP.

The first letter described how the PPP is affecting someone I know, someone very close to me, an independent contractor, a “gig worker” in today’s parlance, and the trials and tribulations of her attempts to receive the PPP loan she deserved.

Morning Joe: Why don’t we just stop pretending that we have the 25 Amendment?

Commentary

A few days ago I posted an Around the Block entitled, “25th Amendment Now! – We cannot wait any longer.” https://around-the-block.com/2020/04/24/25th-amendment-now/

Pipe dream? For sure. Wishful thinking? Of course. Ever going to happen? Not a chance.

Well this morning on Morning Joe host and former “movement Conservative,” Joe Scarborough, confirmed my worst thoughts, nailing the 25th Amendment’s coffin while burying the 10th Amendment as well.

WaPo: Administration scrambles to stop people from injecting disinfectants

Commentary/News with a Twist

As the administration scrambled to contain the Trump “drink disinfectant” advice (I think that’s called an “unforced error” in tennis…oh, wait, Trump’s a golfer, maybe he should get a “mulligan.” But I digress.), among the administration’s admonitions were these:

25th Amendment Now!

Commentary

We cannot wait any longer

A mere four days ago I wrote a piece which included a satirical riff on Vice President Mike Pence’s approach to invoking the 25th Amendment. https://around-the-block.com/2020/04/20/around-the-block-this-and-that/

Since then things have deteriorated to a point no one could have imagined.

Since then, the President of the United States suggested injecting light and disinfectant into people’s bodies to “cure” Covid-19.

“Dumb as a box of rocks”

Nostalgic News with a Twist

“…y, mudo como una caja de piedras

Following a series of Around the Block posts focussing on the increasingly large group of American elected leaders, cabinet members, politicians and presidential advisors creating a hierarchy of “dumbness,” a friend wrote to me:

Back when I was in construction, we had a saying that “he’s as dumb as a bag of hammers (or rocks, your choice)”.  For someone even dumber, he was as dumb as 2 bags of hammers, etc. Since there is an almost infinite quantity of numbers, there’s enough bags of hammers (or rocks) for pretty much everyone within Trump’s orbit.

Wouldn’t you know it, my friend’s correspondence reminded me that back during the 2016 campaign, I used the idea of “dumb as a box of rocks” not once, but twice in Around the Block…one featuring Donald Trump Jr., the other his younger brother, Eric.

More dum-dums reveal themselves

Commentary

Where were your cards and letters when I needed them?

Earlier this week I published an Around the Block called, “Dumbestest!” (https://around-the-block.com/2020/04/21/dumbestest/). I closed with this request:

“…And remember, keep those cards and letters coming in – I want to know if you have any other elected officials I can add to this “dumb” hierarchy. And worry not, I’ve already developed a few additional superlatives…”

So, where are you? Do I have to do everything myself? Since my plea to you, my dear readers, two more dummies made the news. In two days. And, I had to find them!

Okay, okay, it’s my job and I love doing it. I’ll do the researching and the writing; you guys just keep on reading.

“Dumbestest!”

Commentary

Follow-up to “Smart, Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest”

Last week I posted an Around the Block called, “The saga of ‘Smart‘, ‘Dumb’, ‘Dumber’ and ‘Dumbest,'” in which I suggested that a hierarchy of governmental leadership was clearly developing.

https://around-the-block.com/2020/04/15/the-saga-of-smart-dumb-dumber-and-dumbest/

My examples were:

  • Smart – Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA)
  • Dumb – Governor Kristi Noem (R-SD)
  • Dumber – Governor Asa Hutchinson (R-AR)
  • Dumbest – President Donald J. Trump (R-Mar-a-Lago)

While I did consider other candidates, I was somewhat restricted by the conventions of “superlative adjectives.” What word would follow “dumbest?
