“Dumb as a box of rocks”

Nostalgic News with a Twist

“…y, mudo como una caja de piedras

Following a series of Around the Block posts focussing on the increasingly large group of American elected leaders, cabinet members, politicians and presidential advisors creating a hierarchy of “dumbness,” a friend wrote to me:

Back when I was in construction, we had a saying that “he’s as dumb as a bag of hammers (or rocks, your choice)”.  For someone even dumber, he was as dumb as 2 bags of hammers, etc. Since there is an almost infinite quantity of numbers, there’s enough bags of hammers (or rocks) for pretty much everyone within Trump’s orbit.

Wouldn’t you know it, my friend’s correspondence reminded me that back during the 2016 campaign, I used the idea of “dumb as a box of rocks” not once, but twice in Around the Block…one featuring Donald Trump Jr., the other his younger brother, Eric.

So, for your reading pleasure, I dug into the archives to present you with (in the former Around the Block format):

As you read these bits of nostalgia, keep this in mind — they were written on October 20 and October 25, 2016.

Remember October 2016?

It was a happier time; it was a simpler time; it was a time when there was no chance in hell that Donald J. Trump would defeat Hillary Clinton; Comey’s letter was not sent to Congress until October 28.

It was a time when I could satirize “The Donald” and his family with the knowledge and confidence that, in very little time we’d never hear from any of them again.

Remember, there was a time. So borrowing, shamelessly from Les Miserables...boy am I spending too much time sheltering in place listening to old shows:

There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in times gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed, that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

Well, at least there’s still “no wine untasted!”
