Open Letter to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)

Commentary

We know the outcome, so this is old, sad news. But still worthwhile to share

Last week, prior to the Senate vote, I mailed a letter to Florida’s senior senator, Marco Rubio (R-FL), regarding Trump’s impeachment and removal. I also sent a summary email to him. As you know. Mr. Rubio voted to acquit on both counts.

I’ve received no response. (This, I’ve found, is typical of the “write your Congressman” process. Beyond the automatically generated “We’ve received your email…” reply, for the most part, the dialogue…or should I say, monologue…ends there.)

While I know this is old, sad news, or to quote the late great Yogi Berra, this is “water under the dam” (or was it “water over the bridge?”), I still thought it worthwhile to more broadly share my thoughts.

Dear Senator Rubio,

This is an email summary of a rather lengthy letter I sent. I understand you and your staff are busy so, I will summarize the key points in the email. When you receive the letter, read more you choose to.

Girl Scout Cookie Civics Lesson

Commentary

The New Yorker-style cartoon we really need

It’s Girl Scout Cookie season again.

As I purchased our “thin mints” and “samosas” and “tagalongs,”* the thought occurred to me that this would be a good time for these girls to not only make money, but also to learn something about the country they’re growing up in.

Finally, an impeachable offense the GOP can get behind!

Commentary

As others stand at attention for anthem, Trump fidgets, points, pretend-conducts the band

The Miami Herald reported today:

“President Donald Trump has repeatedly said all Americans should “stand proudly” during the national anthem, and publicly chastises those who don’t as disrespectful of the troops and the flag.

“But during the national anthem at his own Super Bowl watch party Sunday night, a brief video posted to Instagram shows Trump greeting guests, adjusting his chair, and straightening his suit jacket as other attendees — including first lady Melania Trump and their teenage son — stand with their hands over their hearts. As “The Star Spangled Banner” crescendoes, Trump raises both of his hands in the air, and twirls them around as if conducting the music.”

Plus: More “Truth, Justice and the GOP Way

As of this writing, it appears the call for witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial of Donald John Trump (I) will end up with a 50-50 vote with only three GOP senators voting for witnesses (Mitt Romney (R-UT), Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). A tie vote will result in no witnesses testifying at the trial, including John Bolton, and a vote to remove or acquit scheduled for Friday so that, as Trump (I) has demanded, he will be acquitted before the obligatory Super Bowl interview on Sunday.

Unfortunately, this year’s Super Bowl will be on Fox so the hope that he won’t be interviewed before the biggest audience of the year is pretty, pretty, pretty slim. (With apologies to Larry David)

But I digress. On to Professor Dershowitz.

Mike Pompeo accuses NPR reporter of lying

Commentary

But emails support NPR host after Pompeo calls her a liar in setting up contentious interview

The Washington Post reported that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says an NPR host lied in setting up an interview with him on Friday.

“In an extraordinary statement issued on State Department letterhead on Saturday, Pompeo blasted (veteran NPR host, Mary Louise) Kelly for repeatedly asking him why he refused to express support for the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch. Kelly said afterward Pompeo berated her using profanity and challenged her to locate Ukraine on an unmarked map, which Kelly said she did.

Nostalgic Sports News with a Twist

Jimmy Garoppolo meet Jim Tomsula

I’ve been waiting for the best time to post this column, aware that it will not resonate with many Around the Block readers*. But with the 49er’s playing in their first “Big Game” since Super Bowl XLVII in 2013, this might be the time.

*For those non-resonating readers, try to get to the postscript at end of this story. In fact go there right now if an article about the Niners is not to your liking. Go there because in the postscript, I not only tie all the 49er loose ends together, I offer hope and solace to fans of beleaguered teams (almost) everywhere.

For “Niner Faithful” Super Bowl LIV will be a stunning event. Since that last Super Bowl the team has been, in a word, dreadful. And the fact that they no longer play in San Francisco but in Santa Clara, has simply added to the despair. Their record since 2015 has been: 5-11; 2-14; 6-10; 4-12.

But in the 2019 season, the San Francisco 49er’s record was 13-3, and they’re in the Super Bowl. Now all eyes are on the #1 Bay Area heart throb, matinee idol quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the newest savior of the recently moribund San Francisco NFL franchise (actually, the moribund Santa Clara NFL franchise — there, I said it). Garoppolo is known throughout the Bay Area as “Jimmy G.”

But before there was a “Jimmy G,” there was a “Jimmy T,” Jim Tomsula. Jimmy T was the one season coach of the 49ers in 2015, one of the most painful years in the team’s storied history.

So, in honor of their appearance in Super Bowl LIV, to remember how bad it was, and to celebrate how good it could be, I bring back an Around the Block from that 2015 NFL season.

Stable Genius attends Davos Forum

News with a Twist

Trump’s(I) interview with CNBC demonstrates his sense of history(?), his business acumen(?) and, of course, his incoherence(!)

As the world watches the Senate impeachment trial of U.S. President Donald John Trump(I)*, it is easy to forget what a stable genius Donald Trump(I) actually is. And not only just a stable genius, but one who is the world’s greatest businessman, who knows words…”the best words”…and is apparently eager to use those words to show off his business acumen.

*Note: In keeping with Nancy Pelosi’s statement, “Trump will always be impeached. It cannot be erased,” Around the Block will henceforth follow his name with (I) whenever he is mentioned.

This week, Trump(I) attended the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The Forum, the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation, engages the foremost political, business, cultural and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.

Who better then to have attend this meeting than the world’s most powerful leader and most successful businessman…Donald John Trump(I).

More pizza, fewer vegetables: Trump further undercuts Obama school lunch rules

Typical school lunch under proposed new rules

News with a Twist

President wants kids to eat, look like him

The Washington Post reported that “the U.S. Department of Agriculture has taken another whack at former first lady Michelle Obama’s signature achievement: Establishing stricter nutritional standards for school breakfasts and lunches. And on her birthday.”

Read on as Around the Block expands on the Post’s report and exclusively reveals the back story behind the USDA’s proposed obliteration of Michelle Obama’s school lunch initiative.
