Today, I turn Around the Block over to Bob Cesca of Salon.com and his essay, “Donald Trump’s murder math: Any death toll under 2 million is a ‘very good job.'”
As Cesca writes, and with all due respect to the very clever and very funny Andy Borowitz and his “Not the News” posts in The New Yorker, “During a presidency that’s beyond satire, no one really anticipated that Trump’s Red Hat militia would end up being a death cult, but here we are.”

The conventional wisdom with Donald Trump is that at some point he’d hit bottom; he’d say or do something so dreadful, so vile, so nasty that it couldn’t be topped (well, actually, “bottomed”).
It’s possible that on Sunday he reached that bottom when he suggested that hospitals have been hoarding ventilators and that something more nefarious* may be afoot when it comes to their mask supplies.

Today is Sunday, March 29, 2020. It’s early afternoon. I promised myself that today I’d take a break from writing an Around the Block. I’d take a break from following the coronavirus news. Instead, I promised myself that I’d catch up on the shows clogging my DVR and maybe watch some Netflix and Amazon Prime. I promised myself that I’d write a few more chapters of my novella; maybe even get around to the house straightening/garage cleaning that I’ve been promising to do since the the pandemic left us sheltering-in-place at home.
And then I got this: a reply to a letter I sent to Florida’s senior senator, my senator, Marco Rubio. A reply to a letter I sent to Rubio on February 3!

Some of you might remember MSNBC had a promotional tagline a few years ago, “We Watch Fox So You Don’t Have To.”
They dropped that line several years ago. I guess they got tired of watching the nonsense Fox and it’s talking heads relentlessly spewed; nonsense, that unfortunately, is the only “news” that a large percentage of the U.S. population receives.

Around the Block has learned that Donald Trump is executive producing a new weekly show to air on Fox News. Titled “GE Coronavirus Bowl,” the program will be sponsored by the General Electric company in return for a $75 billion bailout which will be used by the company for executive compensation and stock buybacks.
The show will be loosely based on the 1960’s era CBS-TV show, “GE College Bowl.”
In this new show, two teams, “The Reds,” represented by three red state Republican governors, will compete against a team called “The Blues” consisting of three blue state, Democratic governors.

As I do every day, this morning I watched New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s daily press conference on the Covid-19 pandemic.
As usual, Cuomo was informative and serious (with a bit of humor thrown in every once-in-while to break the tension). His presentation today, like all the others, was organized. Using graphic assists where appropriate, he made his pronouncements with confidence, authority and, most important, veracity.
