Commentary 20 years after the “hanging chad” debacle, Palm Beach County is doing the election right. Yesterday was the first day of early voting in Florida. Although Sharon and I vote by mail-in ballot, this year we didn’t mail our ballots but waited to place them in the polling place drop-off box at our neighborhoodContinue reading “Palm Beach County: “You’ve come a long way, baby!””

“You could drive a person crazy, you could drive a person mad.”
Commentary Sondheim was right – what’s happening now could drive a person crazy. My therapist has counseled me that this is a particularly difficult time for many people in therapy. That people who suffer from anxiety, apprehension, unease, dread, consternation,…you know, I think she used the more common psychological term, the heebie-jeebies, are agonizing evenContinue reading ““You could drive a person crazy, you could drive a person mad.””
Will you still need me when I’m, er, 84 (or 85 or 86 or…)?*
I’ve received an enormous amount of feedback from Saturday’s column, “Dianne & Lindsey Sitting in a Tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!”
While some of the commentary concerned Senator Dianne Feinstein’s imprudent praising of and hugging with Senator Lindsey Graham at the conclusion of the Senate Judiciary hearings on the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett, many more comments revolved around age-related decline in cognitive functions and Congressional tenure and term limits.
Dianne & Lindsey sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!
At the conclusion of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), the ranking member, said to Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), the committee chairman, “This has been one of the best set of hearings that I’ve participated in.” Feinstein then went on to hug Graham. Neither were wearing masks.
Feinstein’s actions upset many liberals and progressives across the country, but in particular Californians, constituents who have been voting for her as their senior senator since 1992.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse on “Dark Money” and the judicial system
Whitehouse concluded his presentation this way, “No, something is not right around the court. And dark money has a lot to do with it.”
The value of higher education
Commentary Truth, perhaps. But not always . A friend of mine showed me this Facebook post featuring Rachel Maddow: “If you don’t think education matters, then you probably get your news from the dropouts,” says the post, comparing getting “news” from the highly educated Rachel Maddow to “news” from dropouts like Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck.
Kim jung-Trump calls for arrest of Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton
Commentary Criticizes AG Barr, SecState Pompeo, FBI Chief Ray for not taking action In a departure from the norm, Around the Block will, except for the headline, add no snarky remarks to today’s story. I will just reprint CNN’s commentary of Trump’s two Fox interviews yesterday, the first with Maria Bartiromo, the second with SeanContinue reading “Kim jung-Trump calls for arrest of Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton”
Trumpolini’s Triumphant Return
The only additional thing Trumpolini could have said beyond, “Don’t let it dominate. Don’t let it take over your lives,” would have been the immortal words of the Wizard of Oz, somewhat paraphrased, “Pay no attention to the coronavirus behind that curtain.”
One final word, however: It didn’t end well for that other “olini!”
“Don Jr. Thinks Trump Is Acting Crazy”
Commentary But the President’s COVID Joyride Has the Family Divided Wait, what? Don Jr. thinks his father is crazy? Are we in some alternative universe? Not according to Gabriel Sherman of Vanity Fair who writes today, “The president’s recklessness at Walter Reed has Don Jr. pushing for an intervention, but Ivanka and Jared ‘keep tellingContinue reading ““Don Jr. Thinks Trump Is Acting Crazy””
Cal Cunningham, Dem running for NC Senate seat, admits sending sexually suggestive texts
Commentary And MSNBC didn’t cover the story! I’ll admit it. I watch MSNBC. Pretty much exclusively. I like their hosts. I like their commentators. I like their expert guests, people like Jon Meacham, Professor Eddie Glaude Jr., Admiral James Stavridis, Chuck Rosenberg, Eugene Robinson, Frank Figliuzzi and Joyce Vance among others. I guess I canContinue reading “Cal Cunningham, Dem running for NC Senate seat, admits sending sexually suggestive texts”
