Covid-19 Live Updates: Treatment That Trump Called a ‘Cure’ Was Tested With Cells Derived From Fetal Tissue

News with a Twist

Trump administration suspended federal funding for most new scientific research involving fetal tissue derived from abortions.

The New York Times reported today that the antibody cocktail for Covid-19 that President Trump touted on Wednesday afternoon was developed with cells originally derived from fetal tissue, a practice that the president has repeatedly condemned.

In suspending federal funding for this type of research the administration stated,

“Promoting the dignity of human life from conception to natural death is one of the very top priorities of President Trump’s administration. Intramural research that requires new acquisition of fetal tissue from elective abortions will not be conducted.”

Vice President Mike Pence was informed of this development just as he started a campaign speech. He was droning “Under the incredible leadership of President Donald Trump…” when an aide whispered the news in his ear. His next words were, “Wait, what???? –– Let us pray.”

  1. what was blocked was federal funding of such research…it can still be conducted by companies using their own funds
