January 6, 2021, a date that will live in ignominy!

A day that promised to be euphoric turned into one of the worst days in the history of the United States of America.

(Note to readers: I know I told you that I was taking a break from Around the Block to spend more time with other writing projects. Yesterday’s events however, were so egregious I found I could not live with myself if I didn’t comment on them. Thanks for your indulgence.)

December 7th will forever be remembered as “a date that will live in infamy.”

September 11th will forever be remembered as the “9/11 attack.”

January 6 will forever be remembered as “a date that will live in ignominy.”

It is impossible to believe that on a day in which the election of President-elect Joseph Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala was to be certified by Congress; on a day in which the final results of the Georgia senatorial election put control of the Senate into Democratic hands, ended up as a day that could be considered the worst day in the history of our formerly great democratic republic.

The roller coaster events of January 6 have left me in a state of shock. I sit here deeply depressed, in disbelief and overcome with emotion. And, perhaps more than anything, I am angry. Angry at the man who occupies the White House. Angry at the GOP senators and House members who have enabled him and helped to foment yesterday’s events. Angry especially at the two highly educated but ultimately moronic publicity hounds, Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, who have put their unencumbered ambitions above the security and tranquility of their constituents and their nation.

I am appalled that the only people who were arrested yesterday in Washington DC were the ones who broke the 11pm curfew, while no one, absolutely no one who stormed the Capitol was taken into custody and charged with, at the least, illegal assembly or breaking and entry, but more appropriately with sedition and treason.

I am appalled that Rudy Giuliani and Representative Mo Brooks, who both appeared with the man who occupies the White House at the rally at The Ellipse and who both, along with that man, incited the crowd to march on the Capitol, have not been arrested for inciting a riot.

I am appalled, but not surprised, that the man who caused the January 6 insurrection, in his speech as the mob was breaking into the Capitol said,

“I know your pain, I know you’re hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election. And everyone knows it….so go home, (and in keeping with his “there are good people on both sides” theme), we love you, you’re very special…”

Think about this for a moment:

• 1814, the U.S. Capitol was set on fire in by the British during the war of 1812. The British were a foreign enemy. On January 6, 2021, the U.S. Capitol was breached illegally by dissident American citizens in a coup attempt perpetrated by the sitting U.S. President
• In 1861, another sitting president, Abraham Lincoln, took the country to war against the insurrectionist, rebellious South. During that war he succeeded in never allowing the Confederate flag to enter in, or fly over, the U.S. Capitol. On January 6, 2021, American insurrectionists brought Confederate flags into the U.S. Capitol.
• In 1941, a foreign entity, the Empire of Japan, attacked U.S. Naval forces at Pearl Harbor. On January 6, 2021, citizens of the United States of America attacked and took over the U.S. Capitol building.
• In 2001, the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked by Al-Qaeda, a foreign terrorist organization. On January 6, 2021, American terrorists attacked and took over the U.S. Capitol and put a halt to the workings of the U.S. government.

As if all this wasn’t bad enough, what are the politicians and news media focussing on?

They’re focussing on the inadequacy of the response to the insurrection, not the insurrection itself. It is unconscionable that the powerful and the influential are not talking about the the wrong thing.

Except, for one – Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) who said this morning:

“This is the first time since the War of 1812 that the Capitol Building has been invaded and occupied. The most concerning thing is not necessarily the failure of planning or the failure of response, it’s that our current President incited this action. This is a fire that he first lit in Charlottesville, and is only been building in intensity over the last few years. It will only be solved by the removal of President Trump.”

There is only one way to remove him before he wrecks more havoc on the nation: invoke the 25th Amendment. After being thrown under the bus by his boss this week, doesn’t it seem about time for our brown-nosing Vice President to wipe the presidential excrement off his nose and do the right thing.

Because if he doesn’t, no one knows what’s next!
