Open Letter to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)

Commentary

We know the outcome, so this is old, sad news. But still worthwhile to share

Last week, prior to the Senate vote, I mailed a letter to Florida’s senior senator, Marco Rubio (R-FL), regarding Trump’s impeachment and removal. I also sent a summary email to him. As you know. Mr. Rubio voted to acquit on both counts.

I’ve received no response. (This, I’ve found, is typical of the “write your Congressman” process. Beyond the automatically generated “We’ve received your email…” reply, for the most part, the dialogue…or should I say, monologue…ends there.)

While I know this is old, sad news, or to quote the late great Yogi Berra, this is “water under the dam” (or was it “water over the bridge?”), I still thought it worthwhile to more broadly share my thoughts.

Dear Senator Rubio,

This is an email summary of a rather lengthy letter I sent. I understand you and your staff are busy so, I will summarize the key points in the email. When you receive the letter, read more you choose to.

  • You say that removing an impeached president might not be in the best interests of the country. But I fear, in this case it appears you and Donald Trump chose not what is in the best interest of the country but what is in your own best interests.
  • You say that even if the allegations against Trump are true, removal is not supported by most Americans. The polls say differently.
  • You believe that because this is an election year, the people should choose, even though you know that Trump has already tried to rig that election and will continue to do so if there are no consequences for his actions.
  • You voted against having witnesses testify in the Senate trial despite the fact that 75% of all Americans wanted witnesses to appear. Is that your idea of “letting the people choose?”
  • In the 2016 primaries you called Trump a con man, dangerous and unqualified. He has proven all of those points, yet you do not believe his actions should be punished.

Here is the entire letter

  1. One of the few bad reasons to move to Florida. Your representatives don’t represent you!

  3. There is no rationale for his vote accept that he was covering his a** . If there were witnesses the GOP knew that the November election was in the trash.

    1. I will. But as I replied to another LMK comment: “My guess is, if I do get a reply, it will be along the lines of Seinfeld’s Uncle Leo who said, when caught shoplifting at the drugstore, “We’re old. We all do it!” For Rubio’s it will be “We’re GOP Senators. We all do it!”

  4. “Senator Rubio…..have you no shame?”——-Ted, letter is right on target….and it is good to vent……but truth, honesty and being principled unfortunately are not qualities that many of our politicians possess! I must say , every so often a glimmer of hope appears (I.e., Romney)…… let me know if you get a response. Just got done listening to our President’s vitriol as he shared his “thoughts” about Biden’s son, Pelosi, etc.——tough to watch!

  5. Excellent letter!!! My fear is that he didn’t even see it – nor would any of his “lackeys” read the whole letter. But I did and thought it was great. Wonder if you could get in a newspaper’s “letters for the editor”. Such a waste of terrific words!

Hope all is well with you and Sharon.
